As an ex-communicated Mormon who was "dyed in the wool" and "Born under The Covenant," the hypocrisy makes reason stare blankly. I find the work, "One Nation Under Gods" the seminal source for the most accurate historical Mormon events, as it is contains endless accurate footnotes and references that can be verified. This cult fits all criteria of the definitions that comprise group behaviors and rituals under the category "cult," and was discussed in one of my Harvard graduate school courses that focused on cults specifically. This 12 million-plus "religion" is a business and should NOT enjoy a tax-exempt status that breeds its followers and preaches hate and judgment toward those who do not agree with their tenets. This cult is a fear-based, misogynistic money machine of behemoth proportions that cloaks itself under a suit-and-tie, clean-cut veneer. Its true belief is that polygamy is the eternal law and that in their version of the "hereafter," polygamy will reign for males only "enjoying" as many wives as desired. Women, of course, will serve only one patriarch, and the husband will participate in judging her "worthy" or "unworthy" after death at the "veil." I have heard Mormons called "sheep." It is not easy for most people to do, especially when they have been a member as long as you. I was of course, very much aware of polygamy in the church, after all, I have polygamist on both sides of the family tree. I was unaware, as are most members of the church, of the depth and breadth of the polygamous and polyandrous relationships entered into by one Joseph Smith, Jr. I took a poll in my High Priests Group of about 25 men, and NONE of them were aware that Smith had married a 14-yr old or that he married women that were already married. Yes, I needed to pull my head out of my ass and I think I succeeded, but only after extraordinary effort on my part. This information is NOT freely disseminated among church members. I really didn't have heartburn with polygamy when I was a member per se (now I do), but after reading "Mormon Enigma", I did have heartburn with the secrecy, the deceptions, and general transparent womanizing of Smith. I actually asked for a quiet departure from the church, but somehow got into an escalation of testosterone with the Stake President. Judging by how I have been treated since the article, it was absolutely the right thing to do. No regrets here. Good luck trying to keep the mishies off your doorstep! I like the rag, Alan.
